Welcome

to the official website of the vintage tugboat

At about 90% restored, , the SAND MAN was launched with great fanfare on Sept. 1, 2005. Cruising under her own power for the first time since 1997, the boat made her way from Swantown Marina, around the point to her permanent moorage at Percival Landing.

Olympia's Wooden Boat Fair, 2006. Almost 1200 visitors were welcomed aboard!

Olympia, Washington has been SAND MAN's  home her entire working life.  Old-timers from Olympia to Tacoma, to Vashon Island and beyond, love to tell their stories of the part this little tugboat played in their lives.

SAND MAN was built in 1910. She was originally powered by a 50hp Frisco Standard gasoline engine, making her  possibly (no one knows for sure) the first tug on Puget Sound to be so powered. For more on the history of the tug, click below.

Now, after many years,  SAND MAN is almost completely restored. The tug is once again cruising the  waters as she has always done -- this time as a living reminder of the rich maritime history of the South Puget Sound.
