The Deckhouse

2003-2004

Finally! Work on the deckhouse is underway. Working with some of the finest wood available, the house is being rebuilt to the exact specifications as the original. Wait until you see the finish!

Bob and Paul start framing.

Slowly Taking shape

Paul demonstrates "perfect pitch" as he tosses a worn out drill into the garbage can -- without hitting the sides!

More to come!

The house is framed and ready for siding. Here is a view of the roof --

The portside corner aft of the house shows the finish that will decorate the entire house!

Detail of the mortise work just like it was done back in 1910!

Here is how she looks, ready for siding , plumbing and wiring!

Kirk Sullenes fits a freezeblock above the pilothouse.

The tongue & groove siding is put up and trimmed, while later, after the first coat of varnish is put on, Dave Bushell applies a light sanding to the finish in preparation for another coat.

As Tony chips away at the windlass (to be remounted on the bow), he and Kirk discuss the old piece of machinery.

Kirk applies the second coat of varnish. When done, the house will look as it did when the boat was launched in 1910.

Good view of the varnished siding at the aft end of the house.  Back in the old days, SAND MAN was known as a "yacht among tugboats."
