1997's Harbor Days classic in Olympia was a
big event for SAND MAN! For the first time ever, the venerable old tug placed in the top three! She finished
second right behind NANAIMO TILLICUM of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Nanaimo Tillicum, a frequent contender at Harbor Days went for the lead early and eventually took the trophy. The big surprise however, was Olympia's SAND MAN, usually content with steering into everyone else's wake, grabbed and held on to second place. Her vintage 1944 Caterpillar D13000 diesel made every one of her rated 100 horses earn an honest day's living.

This photo, taken during the same race gives a better view of SAND MAN's
graceful, yet deteriorated lines.
Restoration efforts are now underway.
