|
|
Olympia (Sept. 3, 2006): Tug SAND MAN returned to the Harbor Days race course after a nine year absence. How would she do? How would the engine hold up? Racing in the Small Harbor Tugs heat, SAND MAN found herself in a field of five boats. Off the line, it was NEWT, SANDMAN and FAVORITE., followed by YOEMALT and KATHY (right).

Special guests on board included Phil Oliphant, who crewed on SAND MAN back in the early 1940's ... |
...and former SAND MAN mechanic and engineer, Mike Crawford. In the background is longtime supporter, Bill Brandt. |

SAND MAN held her own until NEWT got serious and poured on some extra fuel! FAVORITE, in the background was soon left in the dust by both boats. |
Skipper, James Swift worked to keep the boat in the groove! Note the authentic 1910 navigation device (left). |

Newt pulls out in front and goes for the win! |
While on SAND MAN, a cheer goes up as the boat crosses in second place. On the right, is SAND MAN mechanic genius Craig Kinneman who had the CAT D1300 motor purring like the 62 year old kitten she is! |

Over on the shore, local residents know what this day this is! |

| Later, back at the dock, it was back to business. Over the Labor Day weekend, 1009 people signed SAND MAN's guest book! | The kids had fun playing tugboat. And who knows how many of them will grow up to race their own boats! |
