The saga continues ...

October 31

By 11am, the holes were sealed and 12 gas powered pumps were in place. The roar of the pumps could be heard across the bay. Below, divers readjusted the air filled barrels. Three hours of continuous pumping brought SAND MAN up this far.

The pumps, donated by Lew Rents of Olympia, had to be fueled constantly. Max Powell (foreground) grew up on SAND MAN as his father, Bob (gassing up a pump) was the tug's last private owner.

Hoses are lowered below through a hole cut in the roof just over the engine room. While most of the water was directed across the dock and away from the boat, two pumps shot the water back near the boat. Despite how it looks, water is not being poured back into the boat.

For now, it was a matter of waiting and keeping the pumps filled with fuel.
Tragedy! After about five hours of pumping, and as the boat was slowly lifting herself from the deep, she suddenly listed, tipping right into the dock. A diver working on the near side said he had to quickly swim under the dock to avoid the falling boat.
